As an Associate Member of the renowned, and highly decorated 1st Cavalry Division Association, I was honored to attend the reunion this year in Louisville, KY. This was their 76th year of coming together in brotherhood!
My sister, brother, and friend came along to celebrate with me, as we approached the date my book was being released (Pennies from Vietnam), and were blown away by the hospitable welcoming they gave us all!
If you don't know about the 1st Cavalry, you may not realize they have been around since 1921 and have served as a cavalry division (on horses), an infantry division, an air assault division, AND an armored division! 1st Cav soldiers have served in WWII, the Korean War, the Persian Gulf War, the War on Terror, and more... and were instrumental in all the things in what I call 'Larry's War'... fighting/evacuating/supplying/rescuing/marching and flying through and over the jungle and so much more in Vietnam. Larry once wrote that a report came out from Honia that stated, 'If it wasn't for the 1st Cav in Vietnam, this war would have been lost long ago'. Larry also admitted to our Mama that they called his famous division, 'The Killing Dogs'.
This group of 1st Cavalry troopers is unique and extraordinary in many ways, beyond what we can imagine. Each of the men and women I have met in the 1st Cav is near and dear to my heart. They welcomed me as the KEYNOTE speaker at their annual Veterans Day Dinner in Washington, D.C. in 2019. Speaking to those warriors in the audience was the highlight of my speaking career to date but came at a very difficult time. They had never had a civilian speak at this distinguished event, so I felt the love in the room, and the honor was overwhelming! They welcomed me and my family again this year and invited to me more events coming up soon. They treat us like their family member, because of my brother's service, and I feel Larry in the room any time I'm around the soldiers sporting the legendary black and yellow symbol. I plan to visit their headquarters at (the formerly known as Fort Hood, now named) Fort Cavazos, Texas. They appropriately just call it 'Fort Cav' now. Coming soon to a blog post near you (:
Cheers to the 1st Cavalry Division!!
